LMFAO’s first true worldwide success came with 2011’s Party Rock Anthem, a number one in no less than 13 countries, including US. Faced with the challenge of following that, the electronic dance music group scored another huge hit in 2012. Its name was Sexy and I Know It and it made LMFAO the first duo since OutKast to have 2 consecutive number ones.
The few critics that wrote about Sexy and I Know It had mostly negative reactions. Pop Crush felt the lyrics were embarrassing, while the synth loops outdated. A.V. Club singled it out as an example of why the whole album is “unbearable without the assistance of several stiff cocktails”. The concept behind Sexy and I Know It is that it is an over-the-top parody of boasting about one’s body. This is evident in the lyrics (“Girl look at that body, I work out”) as well as in the song’s video, which shows member Redfoo together with a group of men dancing in speedos around town.
After the success of Sexy and I Know It, LMFAO released one more single, Sorry for Party Rocking (#29 in Billboard), before announcing that they would go on a temporary split. The members decided to focus on individual projects for a while, as Redfoo explained: “I feel like we’ve been doing this for so long, five or six years. And we’re kind of like saying, well, let’s just do what’s natural and just kind of explore that, instead of like forcing it all the time.”
Sexy and I Know It spent 2 consecutive weeks at number one in Billboard Top 100, before being dethroned by Rihanna’s We Found Love (featuring Calvin Harris).
